Perinatal Anxiety
and Mood Disorders
Postpartum Depression and Anxiety
Approximately 21% of women experience depression following childbirth. Symptoms may include: sadness anger, rage, fear, guilt; lack of interest in the baby; appetite and sleep disturbances; difficulty concentrating or making decisions; possible thoughts of harming the baby or oneself. You may experience feeling sad, depressed, and/or may find yourself crying a lot, you may experience diminished interest in becoming a mother, you may feel worthless or guilty, especially about not being a good mother.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Excessive and uncontrollable worry; being “on edge” or irritability; chronic fatigue, poor sleep and concentration. Physical symptoms can include: headaches, muscle tension, nausea, diarrhea and other GI distress. Postpartum anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, OCD and GAD appear to be as common as postpartum depression and even intersect with depression. You may experience panic attacks, hyperventilation, excessive worry, restless sleep, and repeated thoughts or images of fearful things happening to the baby.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
It is estimated that as many as 11% of new mothers experience intrusive thoughts or mental images often related to endangerment of the baby. The distressing thoughts may be accompanied by avoidance of certain things or doing things over and over to reduce the fear. Mothers know their thoughts are bizarre and feel horrified by them. They are very unlikely to ever act on them.
Panic Disorder
This is a form of anxiety that occurs in up to 11% of new mothers. Symptoms include: feeling very nervous, sudden intense fear or distress; having recurring panic attacks (shortness of breath, chest pain, heart palpitations), many worries and fears such as a fear of going crazy or of losing control.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Can develop after experiencing an event that threatened the mother or a loved one's life such as a childbirth trauma or an infant's NICU stay. Symptoms include: intrusive and recurrent memories, nightmares, and flashbacks; avoidance of trauma-related thoughts, feelings, or external reminders; irritability; angry outbursts; difficulty concentrating, hypervigilance; easily startled; sleep and appetite changes.
Postpartum Psychosis
Occurs in only 1-2 out of 1000 childbearing women. Symptoms include: rapid shifts in mood, confusion, erratic behavior, delusions, and hallucination, feeling very irritated, hyperactivity, decreased need for or inability to sleep, paranoia and suspiciousness, rapid mood swings and difficulty communicating at times. This condition requires immediate help.
Somatic Therapy for Maternal Mental Health
Somatic therapy is a powerful modality for maternal mental health that acknowledges the deep connection between the mind and body. This approach emphasizes the role of bodily sensations and movements in processing emotions and trauma, and it can be tailored to the unique experiences of pregnancy, postpartum, and early motherhood.
Through guided awareness exercises and gentle movements, mothers and mothers-to-be can release stored tension and unlock emotional blocks. Somatic therapy offers a safe space for clients to explore and express their feelings, fostering a sense of grounding and empowerment. By integrating body-centered practices with talk therapy, you can experience profound healing and a greater sense of ease and well-being in your maternal journey.
Therapy for Postpartum Depression
You are “supposed” to be overwhelmed with joy and love for your new child, but all you feel is sad, hopeless, dreadful, anxious, guilty, and overwhelmed. Postpartum, you may be experiencing hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, grief over your former life, and anxiety around being a new parent – all of which can lead to postpartum depression (PPD). PPD can manifest within the first few weeks after childbirth or develop gradually over several months. With the right support, PPD is a treatable condition, and mothers can regain their emotional wellbeing and thrive in their maternal role.
