Finding Your Way Back to Love With The Gottman Method

Relationships are work. They are meant to be. They require adaptation, evolution, and betterment. Sometimes, that work is much too much to be done alone. The Gottman Method for Healthy Relationships, is one way to support that work. The Gottman Method is a gold standard approach to couples therapy. Developed by psychologists John Gottman & Julie Gottman, this science-based approach posits that negative emotions such as resentment, and defensiveness have a larger impact in hurting a relationship than positive emotions such as love and care have in helping a relationship.

This structured therapy focuses on the development of skills amongst partners to maintain admiration and love, enable them to turn towards each other to have their emotional needs met, resolve and manage conflict, and learn how to cope with mistakes.

How to Know if the Gottman Method is for You

The Gottman Method has been used with over 3000+ couples, who are all in different stages of their relationships. This modality can be used for partners’ early on in their relationships, partners’ married for decades, it can be used to restore excitement in one's relationship, it can be used to manage and resolve conflict or infidelity.

What to Expect

1) Each partner will establish a relationship with their therapist through history sharing, speaking on their philosophy and approach to their relationship, and will also declare their individual goals for treatment.

2) You will undergo a comprehensive assessment of your relationship, as well as discussing areas upon which you disagree.

3) You will receive psycho-education on the research-derived qualities of a healthy relationship.

4) The therapeutic process will seek to reignite the fondness, admiration and respect that once brought you together.

5) You will learn and practice skills for each component of a healthy relationship, from repairing relationship rupture, to developing trust, to healing from regrettable mistakes.

6) You will be guided through the use of interaction skills by your therapist.

7) You will develop tools that will help you check in on and maintain your progress beyond the therapeutic process.

How it Works

The Gottman Method is based on observations that indicate that there is a real science and understanding to that most indescribable of experiences - love. It is built on mountains of research that shows the impact of negativity on the brain. It states that if partners’ don’t take the steps to counteract or work through this negativity, partners’ are bound to drift apart emotionally. It seeks to equip partners’ with the ability to maintain a positive view of each other that can withstand disgruntling circumstances
