Taking Back Control of Your Life Through Mindful Meditation

Often times as human beings we find ourselves feeling stuck, repeating the same cycles, patterns, and habits. These same thoughts and emotions can affect our mental health, physical health, and overall well-being. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma can take a toll on our bodies and have a lasting impact. Impacts that can take away from our true inner strength and beauty. But what if I told you there was a way to navigate these stressors and overcome these emotional challenges in the comfort of your own space.

Meditation can be a powerful tool to utilize to decrease these overwhelming stressors, regain control of our lives, and find the peace and stability that we’re longing for. Life can be full of big emotions, some of these emotions can stick around and linger while others slowly disappear. It can be a struggle managing these feelings that we just can’t seem to shake. The mental stress alone can cause us to feel like we’re carrying this heavy burden with no real sight of when or how we can put it down. It’s during these times where we can tap into our superpowers and strengths to provide ourselves the relief that we’re searching for. Connecting our mind with our body allows us to develop a deeper understanding of who we are and what we are capable of. A true insight into the strength that we carry with us daily.

What Is Meditation?

Meditation has been used for thousands of years as a meaningful way to gain clarity and understanding of our thoughts and emotions. Meditation can allow you the opportunity to create a safe space for yourself, through yourself, to better understand yourself. As your thoughts begin to stream in one by one, and the emotions come hand in hand, practicing meditation will encourage you to honor these thoughts and release them as needed. Meditation is not meant to rid you of your emotions, but rather allow you to experience them as they come and develop a stronger sense of self-awareness and mental clarity. It is the act that encourages you to deep dive into your inner being while developing an intimate connection with yourself, to appreciate your mind, body, and spirit.

How To Meditate

  1. Begin by carving out time for yourself, it could be 5 minutes, it could be 30 minutes. Allow yourself the gift of your presence.

  2. Next, find a safe spot in your space, it may be on your bed, couch, floor, or chair. Comfort is key here.

  3. Start to bring attention to your body, relax your shoulders, unclench your jaw, and rest your tongue gently to the roof of your mouth.

  4. Eyes may remain open, slightly closed gazing past the tip of your nose, or completely closed. It’s about finding what works for you and what feels the best for your body.

  5. Slowly begin to bring attention to your breathing as you inhale and exhale at your own pace.

  6. Allow your mind to wander, experience the emotions in a non-judgmental way while filling yourself up with grace and compassion.

  7. Gently come back to your breath, repeating the cycle as often as you’d like.

Perks of Meditation

As a self-soothing tool, meditation has several great benefits. Many of these benefits include a decrease in stress, anxiety, and depression while increasing patience, self-compassion, and emotional stability. As you begin your journey into self-discovery, it’s important to remember to allow yourself some kindness. Building your foundation in meditation is not meant to resolve your struggles, but rather another tool in your self-care toolbox - guiding and supporting you to become the best version of yourself.
